SUGARING + WAX

MILDRED + GERTRUDE provide hair removal services for the entire body for both men and women at our Madison location. We are committed to providing the highest quality hair removal services by our experienced aestheticians.

MILDRED + GERTRUDE Is proud to be a front runner in bringing the ancient Egyptian method of sugaring to the Seattle area.

Sugaring Is an all natural, nearly painless method of removing unwanted hair. Consisting of only sugar, water and lemon juice, it is hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic and gentle on even the most sensitive skin. The sugaring method is safe and effective for every hair and skin type. Sugaring leaves skin feeling smooth and clean, increases hair softness and reduces hair growth.

Our sugaring paste is warmed to just above body temperature, ensuring there is no risk of burning or swelling. Sugar grabs the hairs by the root and extracts them in the same direction of hair growth; meaning no hair breakage, leaving you smoother for longer. It removes dead skin cells and does no adhere to your live skin, which greatly reduces the pain, redness and irritation. Since it’s water-soluble, there is virtually no mess after your service, as it dissolves immediately when water is applied.

HAIR REMOVAL PREPERATION

Get the most out of your hair removal services with the following tips:

HAIR LENGTH: It is important to come into your hair removal service with at least 1/4 inch of growth in order to effectively remove your hair. If your hair growth is not sufficient for removal, you will have to be rescheduled.

COMFORT: Our highly-trained aestheticians work hard to give our guests the most gentle and painless service possible. Because each of our guests have different levels of tolerance and sensitivity, we offer numbing gel available for purchase. Other precautions you can take to reduce discomfort include: avoid caffeine/alcohol the day of your service - this increases blood flow and sensitivity. Avoid applying makeup to freshly sugared skin - this can cause infection or irritation. Ibuprofen or Aspirin before your service can also help reduce pain and prevent swelling.

SHAVING: However tempting it may be to get rid of the stubble that grows in between appointments, shaving is counterproductive to sugaring and waxing. Because hair grow on separate cycles, shaving ensures a more uneven result. Shaving causes the texture of your hair to feel more thick, sharp and coarse, negating some of the major benefits of sugaring. Shaving can cause irritation and ingrown hairs. Lastly, shaving will make your next sugaring appointment more painful.

EXFOLIATION: Use an exfoliating scrub or ointment regularly between your treatments and on the day of to help prevent ingrown hairs and to keep your skin and hair follicles soft and smooth.

LOTIONS/OILS: Keep your skin free of any lotions/oils on the day of your service. Lotions/oils can act as a lubricant on hair follicles, making it difficult for the sugar to adhere properly. After your service, only apply gentle perfume and chemical free lotion as needed.

TANNING: Tanning (in the sun or in a bed) the day of your appointment leaves your skin extra sensitive, which can lead to more pain and irritation. If the hair removal area will be exposed to sun the following day, make sure to use high SPF sunscreen.

EXERCISE: Sweating, chaffing, and high body temperature can cause a freshly sugared area to become irritated, swollen, sensitive and cause ingrown hairs. Wait at least 24 hours before working out.

MAINTENANCE: Sugaring reduces hair growth over time. Book your hair removal appointments on a regular maintenance schedule, every 4-6 weeks, to ensure the smoothest result and most painless service possible.

HOMECARE INSTRUCTIONS

Slight reddening is normal and should disappear within a few hours depending on the area. Some clients complain of an itching sensation; this is caused by increased blood flow to the area and is normal. Caring for the skin in between appointments is as important as the treatment itself.

After hair removal services, we recommend the following:

  • Avoid tight clothing

  • Avoid sauna, steam rooms, baths and hot tubs first 24 hours

  • Avoid sun bathing and tanning beds for 48 hours

  • Avoid scented body moisturizers, perfumes, and alpa hydroxide for the first 48 hours after your service

  • No exercising immediately after sugaring and waxing treatment

  • It is recommended that you abstain from skin to skin contact for the first 48 hours after any type of bikini or brazilian sugar or wax

  • Hot body treatments, such as the Sudatonic, are not recommended in the same day as any body sugaring or wax treatment (excludes facial wax or sugar)

  • Exfoliate 24-48 hours after treatment this will help prevent ingrown hairs caused by dead skin buildup in the area. We recommend exfoliating gloves, a natural body scrub, or a liquid exfoliator like Tendskin

Soothing recommendations:

Help pamper and calm your skin with an application of an all-natural soothing remedy like aloe vera, squalane oil, or vitamin E body oil. We suggest that you are loose clothing to your next appointment. This will help reduce the friction between sensitized skin and clothing, and lessen the occurrence of ingrown hairs and skin irritation.
